Dungeons & Dragons for Beginners: Summer Adventure Group
An unforgettable summer adventure where communication, teamwork, and imagination come together.
What if your child spent part of their summer solving mysteries, exploring magical worlds, and working alongside a team of fellow adventurers?
Our Beginner Dungeons & Dragons Summer Group is a five-week program for students in Grades 5–8 who are curious about D&D and want to learn how to play in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Whether your child already loves fantasy stories or has never rolled a 20-sided die before, this group is designed to help new players jump into the adventure with confidence.
Along the way, they'll build communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills in a way that feels engaging, meaningful, and fun.
What is Dungeons & Dragons?
Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a collaborative storytelling game.
Players create their own unique characters and work together to explore exciting worlds, solve challenges, and make decisions that shape the story. There are no winners or losers—the adventure unfolds based on the choices the group makes together.
Unlike many games, D&D depends on communication.
Players ask questions, explain their ideas, solve problems, negotiate different opinions, and make decisions as a team. Every session is different because every group creates its own story.
No previous experience is required. We'll teach your child everything they need to know.
Why an SLP Clinic?
At Mercury Speech & Language, we're always looking for meaningful ways to help children develop communication skills.
Dungeons & Dragons naturally creates opportunities to practice many of the skills that support success in school, friendships, and everyday life.
Throughout the campaign, participants will have opportunities to develop:
Perspective-taking
Flexible thinking
Problem-solving
Teamwork and collaboration
Self-advocacy
Leadership
Conversation skills
Speaking within a group
Explaining ideas clearly
Asking and answering questions
Active listening
Planning and decision-making
These skills aren't taught through drills or worksheets.
They emerge naturally because the players need them to overcome challenges and move the adventure forward.

Would benefit from practicing communication and collaboration in a small group
Wants to meet peers with similar interests

❋ What Will a Session Look Like? Each week, players will:
🎲 Continue an ongoing adventure together
🛡️ Solve puzzles and overcome obstacles
🗺️ Explore new locations
🧩 Work together to make decisions
💬 Discuss strategies and share ideas
🎭 Role-play their characters
⚔️ Face exciting challenges
🎉 Celebrate victories (and sometimes laugh when plans don't go as expected!)
No two sessions are exactly alike.
❋ Why Keep the Group Small? We're intentionally limiting the group to just five participants.
A small group allows every player to:
Participate regularly
Build relationships with peers
Contribute ideas to the adventure
Receive support while learning the game
Have meaningful opportunities to communicate throughout every session
❋ A Unique Leadership OpportunityThe campaign will be led by a teen Dungeon Master who is passionate about Dungeons & Dragons and excited to introduce new players to the game.
Sessions will be supervised by one of our Speech-Language Pathologists to help create a supportive, engaging environment where every participant can contribute and enjoy the experience.

-

Many children find it easier to participate when communication has a clear purpose. D&D gives every player opportunities to contribute in ways that match their strengths, whether that's coming up with creative ideas, solving puzzles, planning strategies, or bringing their character to life.
